Research Background

My research is about the establishment of genotyping protocol for genetic analysis of southern pig-tailed macaques in habitats with different levels of anthropogenic disturbance, using DNA from non-invasively collected faecal samples. Throughout the times working on the project, I keep on learning new molecular techniques and skills, in the meantime, my understanding about genetics studies is improving and enriching. However, the environment I am currently conducting my works in is lacking of colleagues with related background of such study interest that are able to discuss about thoughts and exchange opinions.

The conference had provided a platform for me to gain exposure to many interesting topics in the genetic aspects of non-human primates through the talks where researchers from far and wide shared about their in-depth insights. I am more than grateful for several experienced geneticists who diligently shared their constructive opinions on my project and I have learned a lot from their valuable guidance. Furthermore, I appreciate the opportunities to talk to some of the researchers that are working on similar kind of studies which led to meaningful conversations as we could share our ideas and actually felt being understood as our research topics are not that popular to those who are not familiar with our researching fields.

Although attending an international-level conference as a first timer was a bit overwhelming, at the same time that was a great experience as I could meet friends that I have not met in a while and get to know some new friends. Overall, I am glad that the host made this well-organized conference happened and even provided travel grant that supported us students financially to attend the event.

After meeting lots of enthusiastic primatologists and learned about their inspiring works, I look forward to seeing them continue their endeavors and shine in the field of primatology. Lastly, I hope that the findings of my work could contribute a tiny bit in putting together the puzzles of conserving the endangered Malaysian macaque species .
